FastAnt guide to biodegradeable materials for polywrap

At FastAnt we take the impact on the environment seriously, and we have been investigating for some time using biodegradeable materials instead of the traditional polythene material.

We regularly get asked about the impact of traditional polythene in polywrapping, and the implications of using a more environmentally friendly material.

To guide our clients we have produced a simple 'frequently asked questions' file below:

What is degradeable film?

Traditional polywrap is made from polythene which can be recycled. However, plastic recycling is confusing due to the wide number of different types of material that cannot be mixed. Degradable films will naturally breakdown even if not buried.

Will the film degrade before the end of its natural life?

Tests show that degradeable film will withstand exposure to light and temperature typical of retail display or mailing capaigns. Embrittlement of film may be seen to take place around 12 months after extrusion at the earliest. FastAnt buy film in regular periods and the shelf-life is short so you can be sure that your campaign can mail long before any degradation of the film can take place.

Is there an impact in price?

There is a small price difference, and degradeable films are more expensive. However, we encourage our clients to highlight the fact that they are using degradeable film and the positive impact of the environmentally message to a discerning consumer far outweighs the material cost.

Why use degradeable films?

In the UK approximately 80% of plastic is used once and then thrown in to landfill sites, the simple truth is that we are quickly running out of space to bury our rubbish.
