  • FastAnt, You and the Environment
    16th May 2012

    thumbFastAnt, You and

                      the Environment

It has always been the policy of FastAnt to recycle all paper products that we scrap on your behalf, at no charge to you.  Although we will continue to provide a free of charge service to dispose of ‘pure’ paper products, tighter controls imposed on us by the waste disposal industry now mean that certain types of material now incur charges if they have to be disposed of to landfill sites.

This document is intended to clarify what is and what is not classed as  recyclable material and how, at the beginning of your products’ life cycle, we can ensure you incur no extra costs when it comes to disposing of the product at the end of it’s life cycle.

    Recycling Free of Charge

FastAnt will continue to dispose of ‘pure paper products’ free of charge - these are literature products that are only manufactured from paper and have no more than two staples in the spine of the product or have a glued spine.

You will need to take into account how the products are packed, for example, the product may be recyclable but may be banded with plastic or rubber bands or shrink wrapped, this will make the product non-recyclable and will either have to be sent to landfill or processed to remove all outer packaging prior to sending for recycling.  Sending products to landfill or removing all non-recyclable packaging to enable products to be recycled, will incur extra process charges.

    Landfill costs

FastAnt are charged for all items sent to landfill and we recharge our customers for items disposed of in this way.

FastAnt offer the option to process products to enable them to be recycled and this can be quoted upon request, based on your agreed hourly labour rate. This may be a more cost effective option for you particularly if you are disposing of a large amount of product.

    Avoiding disposal costs

To avoid the charges associated with disposing of your products you will need to consider the following when designing and packaging your literature:

FD = Free of charge disposal         CD = Chargeable Disposal

    • Is the product produced from paper only? = FD
    • Does the product include man made materials in it’s manufacture?

Examples:     Wire or plastic comb bound = CD

Product inserted in plastic ring binder = CD

Product has laminated or plastic coated cover =CD

               How is the product packed:

    • Shrink Wrapped = CD
    • Banded using paper bands = FD
    • Banded using plastic or rubber bands = CD
    • In cardboard boxes = FD

  • VAT on Postage
    24th March 2012

    Royal Mail Changes

You may be aware that with effect from 2nd April 2012, not only will postage costs be subject to the annual price increase but also VAT at the current standard rate of 20% will be applied to all bulk mail services.  Over recent years we have been working closely with a range of Downstream Access Postal Suppliers, providing our clients with huge postage savings, over Royal Mail costs, for an often speedier delivery service - one client saved £10,000 in postage costs!  This alternative postal service was previously only beneficial for VAT registered clients, however, as VAT will now be charged on Royal Mail services too, we can extend the savings potential to a much wider field to include businesses such as financial institutes and charities.

In addition to the VAT changes, Royal Mail are also rebranding their range of services, improving delivery speeds, introducing further large letter options, a new packet format, additional unsorted options, lower entry levels and reduced sortation levels - all pretty mind blowing!  Never fear, our dedicated team are fully trained and ready to go so if you're planning a mailing campaign, please call us for advice on how to maximise the postal savings available to you.

  • QR Codes at FastAnt for Marketing Campaigns
    10th December 2011

You have probably noticed codes like this appearing on adverts, on products and packaging and wondered how they are used.

These are QR codes (Quick Response codes). By scanning these with a Smartphone, the associated software will link the user with a web page or provide data.

So how does this benefit a Marketing Operation?

When a user scans the code you have provided on your marketing material, mailing or even your business card, you can provide a code to direct to a specific web page, a special offer or a microsite specific to the mailing you have just sent.

The code is similar to barcodes where your customers are already familiar with the technology so it is easy for them to just point their Smartphone at the code rather than asking them to key in a URL, but the real key is making sure you tell your customer what to do, otherwise they too will be wondering what this square code is for!

Also, as this is web based, it is possible to monitor responses and provide you with statistics from your campaign.

The possibilities are endless - perhaps you wish to show several codes on your marketing material and you can then monitor where your prospect's interest lies.

What about a link to your twitter page or your facebook account? you could even link to a video you have already stored on youtube and later see how many people from a particular campaign were interested!

What about putting a code on free gifts you have given - as long as the product is large enough to contain the code (90% of Smartphones can read 26mm by 26mm, but this all depends on the resolution of the camera in the phone as some can go smaller).

So this all sounds very positive, but what's the downside?

The key to it all is that it is for Smartphone users only so this precludes phones which may have a camera but no software to drive barcode reading.
